Young Farmers Gear Up for Global Glory
A spirited team of young farmers from Sheen, Staffordshire, are set to represent the UK at the Tug of War World Outdoor Championships in Nottingham this September. Despite forming just three months ago, the Sheen Farmers Tug of War Juniors clinched gold in the national 520kg event in Tonbridge, Kent. Their success is a testament to their hard work and determination.
Seventeen-year-old Kitty, a team member, shared her excitement with BBC Radio Stoke, describing the thrill of the sport and the satisfaction of victory after rigorous training. "The training's so hard but once you've won, it's just so special," she said.
Coach Paul Harris, who brought the team together in March 2025, praised their teamwork and strategic rope positions. "In terms of teamwork, they’re absolutely fantastic," he noted, highlighting the team's seamless coordination.
Eighteen-year-old Tom expressed disbelief at their rapid success. "We’ve only just got together this year but we’ve gelled really well," he beamed. This victory marks Sheen's first national win since 2012 and their first junior win since 2002.
Kitty emphasised the importance of mental strength over physical prowess in their journey. "You've got to have a very strong mindset," she explained, adding that the sense of achievement is unparalleled.
The team, many of whom began their tug of war journey through Young Farmers events, will compete against teams from Taipa, South Africa, and Switzerland from 4-7 September. As they prepare to take on the world, the community rallies behind them, celebrating their achievements and wishing them success.
