Local Schools Embrace 'Loan a Lamb' Scheme

In a delightful blend of education and agriculture, over 6,000 school children across Sussex and Surrey have enjoyed a rare opportunity to care for a ewe and her lambs right at their schools. The 'Loan a Lamb' scheme, run by the South of England Agricultural Society’s Education Committee, is now in its fifth year and has reached over 18,000 students across 54 schools since its inception in 2022. This year marked a first, as secondary school students joined the programme, expanding its reach and impact.

Participating schools in 2026 included a variety of primary schools across West Sussex, East Sussex, and Surrey. From Bolnore Village Primary in Haywards Heath to The Mead Infant and Nursery School in Epsom, children have had the chance to connect with the origins of their food and learn about animal care. This initiative addresses growing concerns about children’s disconnect from food sources, providing a hands-on experience that bridges the gap between farm and fork.

The scheme, supported by local farmers, LEAF Education, and the East Sussex Proficiency Test Committee, ensures that each school receives the necessary equipment and support to maintain high standards of animal welfare and education. For a week, schools host a ewe and her lambs in a specially provided hutch, offering students a unique glimpse into the world of farming.

The initiative has even caught the attention of local MP Mims Davies, who visited Felbridge Primary School to witness the scheme in action. As we at Burnett's know, community engagement and educational opportunities like these are key to fostering a well-rounded and informed future generation. If you're considering a move to this vibrant area, we'd love to help you find the perfect home.
