Discover Kent: Londoners' Favourite Escape

Ah, Kent! The picturesque county that’s capturing the hearts of Londoners looking for a fresh start. With its perfect blend of urban convenience and rural charm, Kent is fast becoming the go-to destination for those seeking a change of pace from the bustling capital.

KentOnline has analysed Office for National Statistics data to reveal exactly where these new residents are going, and which parts of the county are attracting the biggest influx from the capital. Dartford, sitting snugly on the border with the London borough of Bexley, tops the list for its proximity and appeal. Since 2011, nearly 60% of its new residents have come from London, drawn by the promise of more space and affordability without sacrificing the convenience of city access.

Meanwhile, Folkestone and Hythe are emerging as creative coastal havens, attracting almost 40% of their new residents from London. Folkestone, in particular, has been celebrated for its community spirit, affordability, and fast rail connections, making it a favourite among those priced out of the capital. Rosie Percy, a Londoner turned Folkestone local, praises the town’s edgy, creative buzz and welcoming community.

Yet, not all areas tell the same story. Dover, for instance, sees fewer Londoners making the move, with only 15.6% of newcomers hailing from the capital. Residents cite affordability and countryside charm as draws, but note a less vibrant retail scene compared to Folkestone.

With almost a third of the 1.4 million people moving to Kent since 2011 coming from London, it's clear that this county is a top choice for those seeking a new chapter. Whether you're drawn to the bustling energy of Dartford or the coastal charm of Folkestone, we at Burnett’s are here to help you find your perfect Kentish home.
